Minutes Heavy Metal Remediation Committee 1 February Meeting 2002 THE HMRC met in the library on 1 February 2002. In attendance from the community were Lyman Houghton (chairing) Shaheeda Pierce, Steve Macdonald, Alison Arthur, and Rita Schenck. Bonnie Meyer from Public Health Seattle-King County also attended. The minutes of the December meeting were accepted with modifications. The agenda was accepted. Reports from subcommittees were given. Our legislators are helping us to get financial assistance for both child use area remediation and for phytoremediation research. What we need to do now is line up supporters so that when the budgetary vote is called action can be taken. Shaheeda will talk to the parks and school district. We need to develop a legislative strategy. May should take this on when she gets back. We need to do more public outreach. In particular, we need to work with the medical community to educate them on the constellation of symptoms of heavy metal toxicity, and to develop a registry for heavy metal symptoms occurrences. It has been difficult to find doctors interested in doing this work, although Dr. Stenaker may be an option. Bonnie said that she would look into the potential for medical support on this issue. It was suggested that we might want to interview people on tape about their experiences with metal toxicity. This would have to be done with some delicacy in order to assure privacy, and at least to have full disclosure for participants. IRPPC reported that their RFP timeline was delayed, but would be out the week of February 6th, with a February 25 conference with the potential vendors. It is expected that a vendor will be selected by the 22nd of March. There was some discussion of changing the time of our meetings in order to accommodate other members, but no agreement on this point. The next meeting is planned for 1 March in the Library.
