VMICC HMRC Meeting Minutes IERE Offices  - DRAFT January 9, 2004 Attending were Shaheeda Pierce, Guy Barret from Dept of Ecology, Smelter Plume, Dennis Saunders, Adam Rawson, Dan Schueler We started the meeting talking about who we are. The minutes from the November 2003 meeting were approved, as was the agenda for this meeting. Announcements none Reports Department of Ecology was represented by Guy Barret. DoE, Seattle King Co Health Dept, Pierce co Health, Kitsap and Thurston County will be conducting a new soil sampling effort for Arsenic. The footprint of the study is somewhat larger than previous sampling efforts, now including more areas to the south in Thurston County, more areas in King, Kitsap, King and Pierce counties. They are also announcing a new program for child use areas, and talk about a new residential soil sampling program. People will sometime in the future be able to have the County sample their soil and the State DoE will pick up the tab. They are also naming ASARCO as the the liable party and announcing their new outreach program, which includes an update of their website. Guy also told us about the current state of the editing of the April 2003 Symposium video. They're hoping to get back to us next week to give us a further update. no reports from IRPPC or King County Public Health. We had a discussion about a new printing and publication of more copies of the Heavy Metal Handbook for Healthcare Practitioners. Shaheeda Pierce made a motion that the Community Council be asked for the funds to print 100 additional copies of the handbook. The motion was seconded and passed. There was discussion of the existing structure of subcomittees and of the mission statement. It was agreed that the subcomittees would be Information, May Gerstle Research/Science - Rita Schenck, Liason - Dennis Saunders and May Gerstle, Action - Shaheeda Pierce. New Business The plan for the next year Dennis wants to continue working with other organizations like Rotary and VIGA. Adam wants to be involved in coming up with new ideas for getting the information we've already gathered out to the public. Shaheed mentioned possibly a third Dirt Symposium. Rita will be working on the Creating Clean Dirt project and will be needing help, wants a volunteer to go to hardware stores to find out what is being sold now, fertilizer now. Guy mentioned a prototype grant proposal he created for a clean dirt project. May wants us to figure out how to further disseminate the Heavy Metal Handbook and also wants us to host another symposium. Dockton park playground cleanup was mentioned.
