HMRC MInutes for Sept. 10, 2004 @ Vashon Library Draft Adam Rawson called the meeting to order at 3:05. Present were May Gerstle (scribe), Kim Thal, Mary Ellen Walker, Adam Rawson, Susan McCabe and Marian Abbott from the State Dept. of Ecology. The agenda was approved. Kim Thal has a daughter going to a private pre- school on the island and wanted to know if the property had been tested and if not, could they do so and if so how. We gave her lots of ideas and answers and hope she will join the committee. Marian happened to have a map of properties tested and what the findings were which she gave to Kim. Marian explained that the smelter shut down in 1986; Lead can cause mental retardation and the clean up threshold is 250 parts/million. Arsenic is the bigger concern here with 20 parts/million being the clean up threshold---anything over is seen as high. Some parts of the island, mainly in undisturbed forested areas were tested as high as 400 parts/million. The Cadmium clean up is 80 parts/million; the primary concern here is for plants. May read the memo from PHSKC that responded to our questions and concerns from the last meeting.May will write them another memo with more questions, specifically about the testing already done at Dockton Park. Marian brought information about the 8 borings done there and explained the sampling and the raw data. The mathematical average was 30 and 24. Marian told us that King and 3 other counties are still collecting more forested samples; the results will be out in early October. There are 7-10 new child care areas on Vashon which will be tested. Representative Dave Upthegrove (33rd legislative district) is drafting legislation. Ecology is working on that as well. Susan McCabe went over the revised symposium(Oct. 30) schedule and needs more information from the speakers. She will send the flyer, history, paid ads, and PSA separately to Nan who will forward them to Kathy Seel and Marian Abbott. POI, VIGA, Island Vets, Sustainable Vashon, Master Gardeners, VIPP, Ecology and Public Health are all invited and will have exhibits. She is also inviting all our legislators and county councilmember. OUR NEXT MEETING WILL BE ON OCTOBER 1, 2004 AT 3 PM IN THE VASHON LIBRARY. Submitted by May Gerstle----corrections are welcome.
