MINUTES VMICC Board Meeting 2/2/2004 Vashon Youth & Family Services Approved 3/1/2004 GENERAL: The meeting was called to order at 7:17 p.m. Board Members present were: Gayle Sommers, Marilyn Omey, Joan Sells, Allison Jones, Jim English, , Yvonne Kuperberg, Jolene Lamb and Dan Schueler Jim welcomed everyone, including the board members present and Bong StoDomingo from KC Executive Sims' office. Board meeting minutes for the January 2004 meeting were approved. The Treasurer's Report was distributed. There is $1632.528 left in the budget as of 2/2/04. Gayle Sommers made a motion that the Board's Dan Schueler look into purchasing a set of amplified speakers for use at General meetings. Cost not to exceed $200. The motioned was seconded and passed. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Jim told us about a King County Cabinet meeting of County heads of departments on February 6th at 12:00 - 1:30PM. The public is invited, especially from the UACs. Gayle Sommers said that she would like to have the issue of ferry/bus schedule problems addressed. There was a short discussion of the thought of having political literature available at meetings and it was decided that we would have a Free Speech table outside the main door where anyone who so wishes can give out political and other literature. ROUTINE BUSINESS: Planning for February General meeting. * Discussion of the Comcast County motion. It was decided that Dan Schueler would get in touch with Steve Silha and Sharon Nelson and possibly someone from Comcast. * Sharon Nelson will possibly continue with her presentation about the Cascadia Project about passenger only ferries. * Someone from the King County Office of Civil Rights would like to make a presentation on the island. They will talk about ways the Community Council and our community in general can be more accessible to people - involvement at this next meeting scratched because of upcoming holiday. * We discussed how we would go about creating new topics for meeting discussion. We will be asking people attending the meeting for General Meeting agenda possibilities, perhaps using our time-honored brainstorming method. OTHER We also discussed the upcoming King County Governance meeting, which Jim attended on January 29. He said was the first one up and talked about the DDES issue. We discussed having the DDES issue being the main topic of discussion at our March meeting. We might be able to get the KD Office of Civil Rights folks come to that meeting. Joan Sells gave us a report about the Aquatic Reserve meeting put on by the Washington State DNR. Marilyn Omey talked about the Disaster Preparedness Volunteer Fair. About 80 people attended the event. They talked about how to get young people involved. Marilyn Omey wanted us to talk about the way committees operate and Jim suggested that it be a discussion of another meeting. We briefly discussed having another Board retreat. Marilyn Omey will be looking into the idea. Marilyn Omey had an idea of doing a survey of island businesses about ferry usage. It was suggested the someone get in touch with the new head of the Chamber of Commerce. A new origin/destination survey was also discussed. Meeting was adjourned at 8:50PM.
