VMICC Board Meeting 3-01-04 Vashon Youth & Family Services Approved 4/5/2004 GENERAL: The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. Board Members present were: Gayle Sommers, Marilyn Omey, Jack Barbash, Allison Jones, Jim English, Yvonne Kuperberg, Jolene Lamb, Jolene Lamb and Dan Schueler. Jim welcomed everyone, including the board members present and Bong StoDomingo from KC Executive Sims' office. Board meeting minutes for the February 2004 meeting were approved. The Treasurer's Report was distributed. There is $1632.28 left in the budget as of 3/1/04. $9,522 of the current year's budget has not yet been spent. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Bong StoDomingo gave us all a new 2004 King County Plans UAC document, which included the current policies, plans, projects and processes. We discussed the document a bit. Jim mentioned a letter he got from Sheryl Whitney. The King County Office of Civil Rights will be making a presentation on April 6th at the library, talking about free workshops on discrimination. PUBLIC COMMENT: Shaheeda Pierce from the Heavy Metals Remediation Committee came to discuss the production of new copies of the Heavy Metal Handbook for Healthcare Practitioners. Shaheeda talked about the costs for producing 60-100 new copies of the handbook. Allison Jones made a motion that the Community Council provide $360 to print the first 60 copies. ROUTINE BUSINESS: Comcast Motion resolution. Dan Schueler made a motion to form a new ad-hoc committee to be called the Communications Committee. The motion was seconded and passed. Dan was named by Jim English as the first chair of the new committee. Dan Schueler also moved that the existing Comcast motion be referred to the new committee for review. The motion was seconded and passed. Gayle Sommers wanted to talk about the idea of a public toilet at the Commons in Vashon. Gayle will be talking to the Park District about the issue. Marilyn Omey brought up the subject of the ferry system determining whether or not to close the Fauntleroy dock. Marilyn and Gayle will be working on generating interest in the Transportation Committee's March meeting, when they will be hopefully having Ray Deardorf come to discuss ferry scheduling and future plans. Planning for March General meeting. * King County Transportation would like to discuss the Northend Fire Signal - 15 minutes has been requested. Jolene Lamb pointed out that the North End Fire station might be torn down in the near future, making the need for a new signal moot. * Dan Schueler will lead a discussion of the possibilities for a collaboration between the Community Council and Voice of Vashon to provide content for a Vashon Channel on Comcast Cable. * Gayle Sommers will be discussing the upcoming Transportation meeting and possibilities for the closure of the Fauntleroy dock. * Marilyn Omey will be presenting a report of the Governance and Policy Committee about the Bylaws amendment about modifying the voting age for members from 18 to 16. * Jack Barbash will be previewing the April meeting by describing what the Sustainable Practices Committee has in mind for a program. * We will be discussing the role of committees in the Community Council for about 1/2 hour. OTHER Jim English talked about the ongoing problems keeping IRPPC going. Stephen Macdonald will be resigning from the board of the committee, making it necessary to find a new board member so that the committee can keep going. He talked about the kinds of things that IRPPC has been able to do in the past. Retreat - Marilyn Omey said that we didn't get much of a response from her request for input about where/when and what to do or whether or not to have a retreat. Gayle Sommers pointed out that there isn't much of the current board's term left. Allison Jones suggested that we should talk about the idea of having the Community Council start a separate committee to be able to raise funds by getting grants that would not have to conform to the UAC guidelines for funding other community projects. Meeting was adjourned at 9:10 PM.
