DRAFT Vashon Maury Island Community Council Meeting Minutes for the May 16, 2005 meeting Courthouse Square The meeting was called to order by President Jim English at 7:30 p.m. The minutes of the April 18 community council meeting were approved. The treasurer, Jolene Lamb, reported that $1,943.85 of this year’s budgeted amount of $10,000 has been spent at this time. Jim English reminded those present that there are two vacancies on the board. Those who have applied for those positions will be interviewed by the board at the June 6 board meeting and the board will select two persons to be confirmed by the general membership at the June 20 meeting. Reports were given by the standing committees. Under old business, the tabled Watershed Plan Motion died. It was presented at the February council meeting, tabled at the March meeting and no action was taken at the April meeting. The parliamentarian, John Burk, explained that tabled motions must have action at the next meeting or they die according the Roberts Rules of Order. Matthew Nolan, King County traffic engineer of the Road Services Division, gave a report on safety enhancements that are being considered at the downtown intersection. The county will be putting in ramps in a few places for use by wheelchairs and others. In addition, the sidewalk will be pushed out at the corners by Blooms and The Hardware Store and also mid-block by the crosswalk to make pedestrians more visible and so they can see beyond parked cars more easily before crossing. Steve Graham, chairman of the Septic Solution Committee, gave a report on the problems of raw sewage being released into Puget Sound from Vashon septic systems and the other problems and solutions associated with septic systems and working with King County. He proposed alternative solutions such as taking control ourselves including a motion that the VMICC move forward with an effort to place a Public Utility District initiative on the ballot in November, 2006. Joan Sells announced that a Bike Rack and Safety Task Force is being formed and that those interested in participating could sign up on the form on the front table. Under new business, Armen Yousufian moved that the Pledge of Allegiance be said at the beginning of each VMICC meeting. A resident of the Burton area asked the community council to help with the problem of dogs running loose and biting people on the Burton Loop.
