Vashon – Maury Island Community Council January 15, 2007 General Meeting Minutes Draft The VMICC meeting was called to order on Monday, January 15, 2007 by President Jim English at 7:30pm in the courtroom of Courthouse Square, Vashon Island. Clerk Dennis Saunders, Board Members: Jack Barbash, Jennie Hodgson, Susan White, Jean Bosch, Daniel Asher were present, along with visitors and Council Members. The votes to approve the VMICC minutes for the November and December General Meetings were tabled until the February, 2007 General Meeting. The agenda for the January 15, 2007 VMICC meeting was approved, after objections and discussion of short-notice program changes. Special Martin Luther King Jr. Day Tribute ~ Paul Shapiro read excerpts from “I have a dream” speech, and a January 16, 2004 essay by Patrick Gavin on King’s policy of non-violence. Committee Reports: ~ Barbara Roberts, Sustainable Practices Committee is exploring possibilities for our future Library to become an enduring place of inspiration and community. Hillery Emmer announced she will begin collecting hazardous materials (non-alkaline batteries, and fluorescent bulbs < 4ft) Jan. 27, 2007 from 11 – 2p in front of True Value Hardware. Call Hillery at 463-7277 for more info. ~ Dennis Saunders, Economic Committee has elected Bob Powell , Chair. Bob Powell has been analyzing the development potential of VMI relative to current zoning and water availability. The committee is also looking into the economic impacts of proposed actions of the State Ferry System. The next meeting will be on the 2nd Thursday of February, 2007 at Courthouse Square. ~ May Gerstle, Disaster Preparedness Committee has been awarded generous grant from King County to do more work. They will host a workshop February 17th at Courthouse Square on Non-Violent methods of crowd management. Joe Ulatoski announced we now have 80 Neighborhood Response Organizations (NEROs) on VMI. See vashonbeprepared.org No Motions were voted on Presentations: ~ Margaret Cruse, Vashon Household was established in 1991 and Margaret gave us a look at the past, present, and future plans of VH. ~ J.W. Turner, Preserve Our Islands (POI), gave history and current status of legal efforts to prevent Glacier Northwest from obtaining a dock permit, thereby preventing large-scale mining on Maury Island. ~ Matt Bergmann advocated negotiating with Glacier.
