MINUTES VMICC PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING Wednesday, August 12th, 1998, 7:30 PM INTRODUCTIONS ANNOUNCEMENTS Mon Aug 17th -- VMICC General Meeting, 7:30 PM, Chautauqua School Mon Aug 24th -- VMICC Transportation Committee, 7:30 PM, Vashon Library Mon Sep 7th (labor day) -- VMICC Board Meeting, 7:30 PM, Chautauqua Sch Minutes of 7/8/98 meeting approved OLD BUSINESS Redraft of Jurisdiction -- Tabled Disaster Planning, etal -- Craig Harmeling Lots of detail -- no one took good notes Craig briefly described (and showed) his book of information and guidelines for handling disasters, etc. on the island -- Gardner and Mark agreed to examine it in greater detail at a later date Fire District #13 is leader on island for rescue/injured/fire Rick Frye heads blockwatch program Department of Emergency Services is over all Red Cross / School District / Mormon Church have disaster plans Craig emphasized the need for individual households to be able to care of themselves for 72 hours: Food, Water, Flashlights, know how to turn off gas if necessary, etc. Comment by Carol and Gardner that Agencies appear to be well prepared but that, in general, individual households, and neighborhoods, are not well prepared NEW BUSINESS Discussion of need for four-way stop by the Senior Center instead of the present two-way stop -- safety issue for pedestrians -- agreed it was important and transferred it to the Transportation Committee for further action Mention of Craig's desire for 103rd street bypass -- gravel road is fine -- another item for the Transportation Committee Short discussion about county actions at the north end - some working, some not Decided to transfer whole problem to Transportation Committee for further discussion with KC roads at the September meeting
