Minutes of the previous meeting were approved Rick Frye discussed Lopez Island's problems of intrusion of salt water into drinking water wells. Nancy Douglas asked if the island's arsenic, et.al., topsoil polution problem should fall under the purview of the Safety Committee. The consensus was that if an "arsenic committee" is to be formed, it should be an ad hoc committee of the VMICC as a whole. DISCUSSION/REPORTS Nancy Douglas described the details of the "Vashon Island Medical Disaster Preparedness Seminar" which she has been preparing for over a year and which is scheduled to take place this coming weekend. Most of the island's physicians, nurse practioners, paramedics, and several EMT's are expected to be in attendance. A more detailed report will take place at next month's meeting. Capt. David Germani of the fourth precinct (which includes Vashon) of the King County Sheriff's Office had been invited to the meeting with the understanding that he might be unable to attend the May meeting. He expressed his desire for an introduction to the island and to field questions and concerns from islanders seeking to exchange information. He indicated that if he was unable to attend the May meeting that he would ensure his attendance at the June meeting. The KC Sheriff's 4th quarter 99 & annual 1999 reports for Vashon were circulated for review. NEW BUSINESS / FUTURE ACTIVITIES Mark Salkind suggested that the committee undertake to organize the emergency preparedness data which the committee has gathered from a variety of island sources throughout the previous year and a half so as to better understand and communicate those roles and functions now being addressed and to identify those which are still in need of being addressed. This was overwhelming supported by all members present and we will begin this task at our next meeting.
