Minutes of the VMICC Transportation Committee meeting, April 24th 2000. Attending: Willem A. Maas- Pro Temp Chair, Ron Turner, Jay Becker, Allan Snyder, Laura Snyder, Matthew Mosteller , Bill & Susan Rowling, Gardner Perry III, David Vogel (Board Member), Carol Bishop, Jerry Henderson. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. Willem Maas informed the meeting that he was acting as pro- temp chair, appointed to this function by the president of the Community Council The main item for discussion was the request by the Vashon/Maury Island Chamber of Commerce that the VMICC Council endorse the proposed 2-hour parking limit on Vashon Highway between the Chevron station to the South and Glendale Realty to the North. Considerable discussion ensued. It was pointed out that unless adequate off-street parking were available, there would be no value to a parking restriction, since there would be no place to go. The availability of the Vashon Market lot for commuter parking was discussed. There are not many users, because the bus service does not connect there. There has been reluctance by Metro Transit to create a stop at this lot for pick-up and drop off of commuters. Several alternative locations were identified and each appeared too expensive for King County in the current budget predicament. This assumes that these locations would be available free of charge. It was agreed that the Chair would contact the appropriate people at Metro Transit to arrange for a meeting to look at workable alternatives that could be used immediately. Several were identified as having potential. The key element in this discussion was the fact that there are three problems associated with excess time parking. I.e. store employees, commuters, and car for sale placements. It was agreed that any endorsement should be postponed until the related issues could be resolved. The meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m. Recorded by: Willem A. Maas
