Minutes of the February 15, 1999 General Meeting of the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council 1. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM, Jake Jacobovitch presiding. 2. Lindy Marcley's Motion supporting participation in the Joint Council of Unincorporated Area Councils was brought up for debate. a) The Joint Council will enable the various UACs to coordinate on topics of common concern b) The Motion was put to a vote and passed: i) Aye 37, Nay 0, Inappropriate 0, Abstain 0 3. Maurice Carpenter's Motion requesting suspension of permits at NW Aggregates' Maury Island gravel pit was brought up for debate. a) The permit applications relied on incomplete and inaccurate information. Operation of the pit is a threat to public safety. The County should suspend the permits while investigating this violation. b) The Motion was put to a vote and passed. i) Aye 40, Nay 0, Inappropriate 0, Abstain 0 4. The Community Council recognized the many decades of service to the Island Community by Craig Harmeling (41 years of service) and Bob Stougard (28 years) with the Fire Department. Pat Britz, Alice Larsen, and Marie Bradley conducted the presentation. 5. Tammy McElyea gave a presentation on the new federally funded domestic violence outreach services program. The program will work with the police and the community to increase knowledge of domestic violence services. 6. Laura Wishik presented information on Preserve Our Island. The organization will take the issue of preserving Maury Island beyond simple not-in-my-back-yard thinking, retaining specialists for environmental issues - hydrology, geology, arsenic contamination, vegetation, near-shore environmental concerns, etc. a) The organization now has bumper stickers for sale. 7. Ann Herfindahl moved that the Community Council contribute $1200 of its contingency funds to the legal fees of the VIABLE cell tower appeal. 8. Gardner Perry moved that the VMICC ask that the County cancel the proposed guardrail project from Burton to Shawnee as a hazard to cyclists, equestrians, and pedestrians, and that the County reassess the risk of accidents and the preservation of rurality in the siting of guardrails. 9.
