The Heavy Metal Remediation Committee worked for the last six years on programs that identify and remediate the contamination of island soils by heavy metals including
Arsenic, Lead and Cadmium. The metals were deposited by the ASARCO smelter in Ruston during the years of its operation from the 1890's until 1985.
The committee has carried out many other projects over the past few years, including hosting 3 symposia in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Ecology and
the publication of a handbook for healthcare professionals about Heavy Metal contamination.
Having accomplished many of the goals it set for itself, the committee has disbanded. The residents and environment of Vashon and Maury Islands thank all the people who made this committee so successful.
